Research and strategy development to promote gender-responsive climate risk finance and insurance

The InsuResilience Global Partnership aims to strengthen the resilience of developing countries and protect the lives and livelihoods of poor and vulnerable people against the impacts of disasters.

In the context of its goal to provide climate and disaster risk finance and insurance (CDRFI) solutions to 500 million poor and vulnerable people in developing countries by 2025, we have worked with InsuResilience to support the development of its gender strategy and action plan.

This work has involved co-authoring two studies Applying a Gender Lens to Climate Risk Finance and Insurance, and Integrating Gender Considerations into Different Models of CRI. Both were developed based on desk research and stakeholder consultation through bilateral interviews.

The results of the latest publication were validated at a session with stakeholders in Bangladesh at the Micro Insurance Network’s International Conference on Inclusive Insurance, and in turn presented at the InsuResilience Annual Forum in Madrid.

This involved facilitating a session around successful gender-inclusive approaches to CDRFI, how microinsurance programs can better access women as a new client group, and identify actions that could ensure delivery of gender-inclusive CDRFI solutions.

“Gender-responsive Climate Risk Insurance (CRI) schemes can provide risk protection that addresses differences in women and men’s vulnerability to both climate risks, and disaster-induced wellbeing loss.”
