Strategy and tool design to identify and address women’s financial inclusion constraints

For UNCDF’s global financial inclusion practice area, co-developed in collaboration with Dalberg, UNCDF’s women and girls’ economic empowerment strategy and strategic implementation plan, including the empowerment framework and a country assessment tool to identify women and girls’ financial inclusion constraints and opportunities.

The tool was piloted in 5 countries, and we participated in conducting human-centred design participatory focus groups in Myanmar.

This work was funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation.

Follow up advisory work involved the development of operations plans to implement this strategy in Myanmar, Bangladesh, Tanzania and Ethiopia. This also involved the development of a proposal for a new women’s financial inclusion programme in Myanmar, which received funding from the UK’s DFID.

“Women and girls face barriers in the enabling environment, in the supply of and in their demand for financial products and services, as well as in their socio-cultural context.”
